South Africa Challenges US Envoy Over Controversial Remarks

South African government summons new US ambassador to address 'undiplomatic' comments by President Trump about alleged persecution of white citizens.
Pretoria, South Africa - The South African government has summoned the newly appointed US ambassador to address controversial statements made by President Donald Trump regarding the country's land reform policies and alleged persecution of white citizens.
In a recent tweet, Trump claimed that South Africa is engaged in a campaign of 'white genocide' through land expropriation without compensation, which the Pretoria government has vehemently denied. The remarks were seen as undiplomatic and sparked a diplomatic row between the two nations.
South Africa's International Relations and Cooperation Minister, Lindiwe Sisulu, confirmed that the US ambassador, Lana Marks, had been summoned to provide clarification on Trump's comments, which she described as 'unfortunate' and not based on facts.
'We have taken strong exception to the President's tweet,' Sisulu said in a statement. 'South Africa will take the necessary steps to address the matter.''
The land reform issue has been a contentious topic in South Africa, with the ruling African National Congress (ANC) party pushing for the expropriation of land without compensation to address the legacy of apartheid-era dispossession. However, the government has repeatedly stated that this process will be undertaken in an orderly and lawful manner, and will not result in a violent seizure of property.
Trump's tweet drew swift condemnation from both the South African government and the international community, with many accusing the US president of amplifying false narratives and inflammatory rhetoric around the land reform debate.
'The tweet is based on false information and is not helpful in finding solutions to the challenges we face,' said Jessie Duarte, deputy secretary-general of the ANC.
The US ambassador's meeting with South African officials comes as the two countries work to strengthen their diplomatic and economic ties, with trade and investment being a key focus of the relationship. The land reform issue, however, has the potential to undermine these efforts if not handled carefully by both sides.
