Sperm Whales Work Together to Assist Newborn Calf

Researchers witness rare footage of sperm whales collaborating to support a mother and her newborn calf during the birth process.
Sperm whales, known for their remarkable intelligence and complex social structures, have been observed in an unprecedented display of teamwork and cooperation. A recent study has provided rare insight into the birth process of these majestic creatures, revealing the extraordinary lengths to which a group of whales will go to assist a mother and her newborn calf.
The research, conducted by the Project CETI (Cetacean Ecology and Telemetry Investigation) team, focused on documenting the birth of a sperm whale calf. Remarkably, the researchers were able to capture footage of the entire process, which unfolded over several hours. What they witnessed was a remarkable display of coordinated behavior and communal care among the whales involved.
