Sports Betting Giants Flex Political Muscle, Invest Millions in Influence

Major sports betting companies like FanDuel, DraftKings, and Fanatics are pouring millions into a new political advocacy group, Win for America, to shape state legislative races across the country.
The sports betting industry is making a major push to influence state elections and shape the future of legalized sports wagering in the United States. Leading companies like FanDuel, DraftKings, and Fanatics have poured a combined $41 million into a new political advocacy group called Win for America, which is expected to play a significant role in upcoming state legislative races.
The formation of Win for America underscores the high stakes involved as the sports betting market continues to rapidly expand across the country. With more than 30 states now offering legal sports betting, and many more poised to follow, the industry is jockeying to secure its foothold and protect its interests in state capitals nationwide.
Win for America, which was launched in June, is being funded by the three major sports betting operators, each of which has committed $13.67 million to the group's efforts. The organization's stated mission is to "support pro-consumer, pro-business policies" related to sports betting and iGaming.
However, critics argue that the group's true purpose is to shape state laws and regulations in ways that benefit the industry's bottom line, potentially at the expense of consumer protections and responsible gambling safeguards.
"This is an industry that has shown time and time again that it prioritizes profits over the wellbeing of consumers," said Les Bernal, national director of the advocacy group Stop Predatory Gambling. "Now they're pouring millions into political campaigns to rig the system in their favor."
The sports betting industry has long wielded significant political influence, using its deep pockets to lobby lawmakers, fund campaign contributions, and shape the legislative and regulatory landscape. But the creation of Win for America represents a new level of coordinated, large-scale political engagement.
Supporters of Win for America argue that the group will help ensure a consistent, business-friendly regulatory environment for sports betting across the country. They also claim it will give a voice to consumers and recreational bettors who stand to benefit from a thriving, well-regulated sports betting market.
But critics counter that the industry's political spending is more about protecting its own interests than serving the public good. They warn that the influx of industry money into state races could distort the democratic process and make it harder for lawmakers to enact robust consumer protections.
As the battle over the future of sports betting in America intensifies, the industry's growing political clout is sure to be a major focus of scrutiny and debate in the months and years ahead.
