States Revolt Against Trump EPA's Drastic Climate Policy Rollback

A coalition of 24 states, cities, and counties sue the Trump administration over its decision to rescind the endangerment finding - a critical legal foundation for climate regulations.
States across the country are taking bold action against the Trump administration's assault on climate policy, filing a major lawsuit to challenge the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) decision to revoke the endangerment finding - a crucial scientific determination that greenhouse gases pose a threat to public health and welfare.
The new lawsuit, led by the states of Massachusetts, California, New York, and Connecticut, argues that the EPA's February rescission of the 2009 endangerment finding was blatantly illegal. This finding has served as the legal foundation for virtually all US climate regulations, from vehicle emissions standards to power plant rules.

In a move the White House described as the "single largest deregulatory action in US history", the Trump EPA revoked this critical climate determination, paving the way for a sweeping rollback of pollution controls and emissions limits. However, the coalition of states, cities, and counties is now fighting back, filing their lawsuit in the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia.
"The endangerment finding is the legal bedrock for all of our climate protections," said Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey. "Repealing it without a valid scientific and legal justification is reckless and illegal." The lawsuit argues that the EPA's action was "arbitrary, capricious, and an abuse of discretion" under the Clean Air Act.
The Trump administration has made dismantling climate regulations a key priority, seeking to boost the fossil fuel industry at the expense of public health and the environment. However, this latest legal challenge signals that state and local leaders are unwilling to surrender in the fight against the climate crisis.
"States are stepping up to protect our communities, our economy, and our planet from this reckless and dangerous agenda," said California Attorney General Xavier Becerra. "We won't let the Trump EPA get away with ignoring science and the law."
The endangerment finding determination, based on extensive scientific evidence, has formed the legal foundation for a wide range of greenhouse gas regulations under the Clean Air Act. By revoking this finding, the Trump administration sought to unravel these climate protections, but this latest lawsuit aims to hold the EPA accountable and preserve this crucial policy safeguard.
"We'll fight this all the way to protect our communities and our climate," said New York Attorney General Letitia James. "The science is clear, and the law is clear - the Trump EPA has no valid justification for this reckless action."
