Stranded Humpback Whale Rescue Efforts Dwindle on German Coast

Germany faces dire prognosis for saving a humpback whale stranded in shallow waters of the Baltic Sea, while a nightclub fire forces hundreds to evacuate in separate incident.
Hopes for the safe return of a humpback whale stranded in shallow waters off the German Baltic coast are rapidly diminishing, according to officials monitoring the situation. The massive marine mammal, estimated to weigh between 15-20 tons, has been trapped in the inlet near the town of Glücksburg for several days, sparking an around-the-clock rescue effort by local authorities.
"The prognosis is not good," said Friedemann Horn, a marine biologist with the Schleswig-Holstein state environmental agency. "The longer the whale remains in the shallow waters, the more its chances of survival decrease."
Rescue teams have tried a variety of methods to coax the whale back out to deeper, open waters, including playing whale songs and using boats to create noise and vibrations to encourage the animal to swim out. However, the whale, which experts believe may be young and disoriented, has so far resisted all efforts to guide it to safety.

Tragically, the story of the stranded humpback whale is not the only major incident unfolding on the German coast this week. In a separate event, hundreds of people were forced to evacuate a nightclub in the coastal town of Timmendorfer Strand after the building became engulfed in flames.

Thankfully, no serious injuries were reported, though several people were treated for smoke inhalation. The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
"It was a very chaotic and scary situation," said one witness who was inside the club at the time. "The fire spread rapidly, and staff worked quickly to get everyone out safely. We're just grateful no one was hurt more seriously."
