Surge in Jihadist Attacks Defies Global Terrorism Decline

New report shows jihadist violence spiked in Nigeria and DRC despite global terrorism deaths falling to a decade low, with Nigeria seeing the largest increase worldwide.
Despite a global decline in terrorism-related deaths, a new report has revealed a concerning surge in jihadist violence in Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) over the past year. Nigeria recorded the largest increase in terrorism fatalities worldwide, with the number rising by 46% from 513 in 2024 to 750 in 2025, placing it fourth on the Global Terrorism Index behind Pakistan, Burkina Faso and Niger.
The report paints a worrying picture of the escalating threat of jihadist groups in certain regions, even as the overall global trend shows a reduction in terrorism-related deaths. Experts say this dichotomy underscores the complex and evolving nature of the terrorist threat, with some areas experiencing a surge in violence while others see improvements.
