Surprise Defeat for Hungary's Strongman Orban Raises Hopes for Change

After 12 years in power, Viktor Orban's authoritarian rule in Hungary has ended in a shock election loss. The new leader, Peter Magyar, vows to restore democracy and distance the country from Putin's influence.
Budapest, Hungary - In a stunning political upset, Hungary's long-ruling strongman Viktor Orban has been swept out of power, dealing a major blow to populist and authoritarian leaders worldwide. Orban's Fidesz party, which has dominated Hungarian politics for over a decade, was defeated in the country's parliamentary elections by a coalition led by Peter Magyar, a pro-democracy reformist.
Orban's loss is widely seen as a victory for liberal democracy and a rebuke of the nationalist, anti-EU policies that have taken hold in Hungary and other parts of Europe in recent years. Magyar, the new Prime Minister-elect, has promised to undo many of Orban's authoritarian measures and reorient Hungary back towards the West and its democratic values.
