Surprise Talks Offer Uncertain Path to Resolve Iran Conflict

New backchannel talks between US and Iran's leadership aim to find a way out of the ongoing conflict, but with much chaos and uncertainty surrounding the process.
Surprise backchannel talks between Donald Trump's special envoy and the Iranian foreign minister have emerged as a potential path to resolve the escalating conflict between the two nations. However, the chaos and uncertainty surrounding the discussions raise questions about their ultimate efficacy.
The talks, which were not entirely secret as the Egyptian Foreign Ministry had tweeted about them a day before Trump's deadline to target Iran's energy infrastructure, may have lasted longer than just Sunday and involved multiple mediators vying for the title of "peacemaker in chief."
For instance, Pakistan's army chief, Asim Munir, spoke with Trump on Sunday, while Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif held talks with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Monday. It's possible that Pakistan could become the venue for further negotiations, which this time may include JD Vance, the vice-president and a private skeptic about the war.
