Taiwan Opposition Leader Meets with Chinese President in Historic Talks

The head of Taiwan's largest opposition party met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, the first such high-level meeting in nearly a decade amid heightened tensions between the two sides.
Taiwan's opposition leader Eric Chu met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on Friday, marking the first such high-level meeting between the two sides in nearly a decade. The historic talks come at a time of heightened tensions between China and Taiwan, which China claims as its own territory despite the island's self-governing status.
Chu, the chairman of Taiwan's Kuomintang (KMT) party, described the meeting as an important step in improving cross-strait relations, which have deteriorated significantly in recent years under the pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) government. Xi emphasized the importance of the '1992 Consensus', an ambiguous agreement that both sides interpret differently, as the foundation for future cooperation.
