Kherson, Ukraine has been at the center of Russia's invasion since the early days of the war. This historic city, once a vibrant hub of Ukrainian culture and commerce, has been transformed by the harsh realities of modern warfare. In the first of a two-part series, we explore how this hometown has changed in the face of Russia's all-out assault on Ukraine.
Kherson, a port city along the Dnipro River, was one of the first major Ukrainian cities to be seized by Russian forces in the opening weeks of the invasion in February 2022. For eight months, the city remained under Russian occupation, until a successful Ukrainian counteroffensive liberated it in November. The battle for Kherson was a crucial victory for Ukraine, but the scars of the conflict run deep.
