Thousands of Soldiers Deploy to Fight Armed Groups in West Africa

ECOWAS, the regional body in West Africa, is sending thousands of troops to combat the growing threat of armed groups in the region. But strained ties with Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso could complicate the mission.
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has announced plans to deploy thousands of soldiers across the region in a bid to combat the rising threat of armed groups. This move comes as tensions escalate between ECOWAS and its neighboring countries, Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso, which have all experienced a surge in violence from extremist factions.
The regional army, known as the ECOWAS Standby Force, will be tasked with securing borders, protecting civilians, and supporting national militaries in their fight against the insurgents. ECOWAS Secretary-General, Omar Touray, stated that the force will be deployed "as soon as possible" to address the deteriorating security situation.
