Thousands of Students Forced to Repay 'Mis-Sold' Maintenance Loans

Over 22,000 students in the UK have been told they must pay back their maintenance and childcare loans, as their courses were never eligible for this type of funding.
Thousands of students across the United Kingdom have been hit with the unexpected news that they must repay their maintenance and childcare loans, after it was determined that their courses were never eligible for this type of funding in the first place. The Student Loans Company (SLC) has now contacted over 22,000 individuals, informing them that they will have to return the money they received, which in some cases amounts to tens of thousands of pounds.
The issue stems from an error in the SLC's systems, which incorrectly classified certain vocational and distance learning programs as being eligible for maintenance and childcare loans. These types of loans are typically reserved for students enrolled in full-time, residential degree programs at recognized universities. By providing this funding to individuals on ineligible courses, the SLC has effectively mis-sold these loans, leading to the current predicament.
