Top Channel 4 Programming Chief Steps Down After Nearly a Decade

Longtime Channel 4 content chief Ian Katz, responsible for the broadcaster's £650M annual programming budget, announces departure following new CEO appointment.
In a major shakeup at the top of Britain's Channel 4, Ian Katz, the broadcaster's director of programmes and the chief overseer of its £650 million annual content budget, has announced his plans to depart the organization this autumn. Katz's exit comes shortly after the appointment of a new Channel 4 chief executive, Priya Dogra, who will now lead the search for his replacement.
Katz, a former senior executive at the Guardian newspaper, has held the director of programmes role at Channel 4 since January 2018. Prior to that, he served as the editor of the BBC's flagship Newsnight current affairs program. During his nearly nine-year tenure at Channel 4, Katz has been responsible for overseeing the creation and procurement of the channel's diverse slate of programming, ranging from award-winning documentaries to popular entertainment shows.

The news of Katz's departure comes at a pivotal time for Channel 4, as the publicly-owned broadcaster navigates an evolving media landscape and the potential impact of privatization plans proposed by the UK government. Katz's successor will inherit the challenge of maintaining Channel 4's reputation for innovative, risk-taking content while also grappling with the financial and strategic implications of any ownership changes.
In a statement, Katz expressed his pride in the work accomplished during his time at Channel 4, stating,
