In a bold and unprecedented move, over 100 legal scholars and experts from the United States have come together to condemn the recent military strikes and bellicose rhetoric against Iran as potentially constituting war crimes under international law. The open letter, signed by a diverse array of legal professionals, raises serious concerns about the conduct and escalation of the ongoing conflict between the US, its allies, and the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The signatories, which include renowned law professors, former government officials, and human rights advocates, argue that the targeted killings of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani and other officials, as well as threats of further military action, may violate the UN Charter and principles of jus ad bellum (the law governing the use of force) and jus in bello (the law governing the conduct of warfare).
