Top NFL Reporter Dianna Russini Resigns Amid 'Speculation' Over Photos with Patriots Coach

Veteran NFL journalist Dianna Russini resigns from The Athletic after photos with Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel prompt internal investigation and media frenzy.
NFL reporter Dianna Russini has resigned from The Athletic less than a week after photos of her and New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel prompted an internal investigation at the New York Times-owned sports outlet.
The New York Post last week published the photos of Vrabel and Russini at an Arizona resort, stating they were taken before the NFL owners meetings that began in Phoenix on March 29th.
"I have covered the NFL with professionalism and dedication throughout my career, and I stand behind every story I have ever published. When the Page Six item first appeared, The Athletic supported me unequivocally, expressed confidence in my work and pride in my journalism. For that I am grateful. In the days that followed, unfortunately, commentators in various media have engaged in self-feeding speculation that is simply unmoored from the facts," Russini said in a letter sent on Tuesday to The Athletic's executive editor, Steven Ginsberg.
"Moreover, this media frenzy is hurtling forward without regard for the review process The Athletic is trying to complete. It continues to escalate, fueled by repeated leaks, and I have no interest in subjecting myself or my family to this ongoing public discussion," Russini added.
Russini is widely regarded as one of the NFL's top reporters, known for her strong relationships with players and coaches across the league. Her resignation comes as a surprise, as she had been a key part of The Athletic's NFL coverage team.
The internal investigation at The Athletic is still ongoing, and the full details of the situation remain unclear. However, Russini's decision to step down suggests the media scrutiny and speculation had become untenable for her to continue in her role.
The NFL community is sure to closely follow this developing story, as the loss of a reporter of Russini's caliber is a significant blow to the coverage of the league. Her resignation raises questions about the challenges faced by journalists in the modern media landscape, where even innocuous interactions can spark intense public debate.
