Top SEC Enforcement Chief Unexpectedly Departs Agency

The Securities and Exchange Commission's head of enforcement, a key role in policing Wall Street, has resigned suddenly, raising questions about the agency's ongoing work.
In a surprise move, the head of the Securities and Exchange Commission's enforcement division, the agency's top cop on Wall Street, has announced his abrupt resignation. Gurbir Grewal, the director of the SEC's division of enforcement, said he would be stepping down from the high-profile role, effective June 1.
Grewal, who had held the position since July 2021, did not give a reason for his departure in the SEC's announcement. However, his resignation comes at a critical juncture for the agency, which has been ramping up its scrutiny of corporate misconduct and financial crimes under the leadership of Chair Gary Gensler.
