Yanar Mohammed, a pioneering women's rights activist in Iraq, has been killed by gunmen. Her tireless advocacy for victims of abuse and championing of gender equality will be deeply missed.
Yanar Mohammed, a fearless and pioneering women's rights activist in Iraq, has been tragically killed by unidentified gunmen in Baghdad. The 65-year-old co-founder of the Organization of Women's Freedom in Iraq dedicated her life to protecting victims of rape, physical abuse, and other forms of ill-treatment.
Mohammed's organization, founded in 2003, was one of the few independent women's rights groups operating in Iraq during a period of immense turmoil and violence. She and her colleagues provided shelter, legal aid, and psychological support to thousands of Iraqi women facing gender-based violence and oppression.
