Trump's AI Jesus Post Stokes Controversy with Religious Right

Trump's depiction of himself as Jesus Christ and feud with the Pope could impact key midterm races as Christian groups voice criticism.
Former President Donald Trump's recent online antics have stoked controversy among his religious right supporters, potentially complicating the Republican party's plans for the upcoming midterm elections. Trump's self-depiction as a Christ-like figure in an AI-generated image, as well as his public spat with Pope Leo XIV, have drawn sharp rebukes from some Christian groups, raising questions about whether these incidents could cost the GOP key votes in pivotal races across the United States.
The Trump-as-the-Messiah Truth Social post sparked immediate criticism from various Christian leaders, including some on the political right. Trump, 79, claimed he believed the AI-generated image - which showed him administering an ethereal light to a stricken man's head as translucent figures descended from the heavens - represented him as a doctor. However, many interpreted the image as a grandiose depiction of Trump as a divine, Christ-like figure.
