U.S. and Israel Target Iran's Security Agencies After Protests

The U.S. and Israel have launched airstrikes against Iranian security agencies that aided in the crackdown on recent nationwide protests in the country.
Washington and Jerusalem have launched a series of airstrikes targeting Iranian security agencies that were involved in the violent suppression of nationwide protests that swept the country in recent months. The strikes, which hit intelligence and paramilitary bases across Iran, represent a significant escalation in the ongoing tensions between the United States, Israel, and the Islamic Republic.
The protests, which erupted in mid-September following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in the custody of Iran's morality police, rapidly evolved into the biggest challenge to the country's theocratic regime in years. Security forces responded with a brutal crackdown, killing hundreds of demonstrators and arresting thousands more.
According to U.S. and Israeli officials, the latest airstrikes were aimed at crippling the infrastructure that Iranian authorities used to violently suppress the protests. Targets included bases and facilities belonging to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Iran's powerful paramilitary force, as well as the Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS), the country's main intelligence agency.
