UK, Allies Condemn Crackdown on Memorial Group in Russia

UK and international allies express grave concerns over Russian court's decision to label respected human rights group Memorial as 'extremist', a major blow to civil society.
UK and other international allies have strongly condemned the Russian court's decision to designate the respected human rights organization Memorial as an extremist group, in a move seen as a major blow to civil society and independent voices in the country.
In a joint statement to the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), the UK, United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and several European nations expressed their grave concern over the Russian government's systematic repression of independent groups, journalists, and activists.
The statement underscored that the Russian court's decision to classify Memorial as an extremist organization and effectively shut it down represents a severe blow to civil society and the protection of human rights in the country.
