UK Calls for Action on Mali's Dire Human Rights Crisis at UN Council

UK urges UN Human Rights Council to address escalating human rights abuses in Mali as violence and instability spread across the region.
The United Kingdom has called on the UN Human Rights Council to take urgent action to address the worsening human rights situation in Mali. In a statement delivered during the 61st session of the Council, the UK representative expressed deep concern over the deteriorating security and humanitarian conditions in the country, which have resulted in widespread violations of human rights and international humanitarian law.
The UK noted that civilians continue to bear the brunt of the conflict, with reports of extrajudicial killings, arbitrary arrests, torture, and sexual and gender-based violence by various armed groups, as well as the Malian security forces. The representative also highlighted the displacement of over 400,000 people within Mali and the growing food insecurity affecting millions.
