UK's Smallest Birds of Prey Face Extinction Risk

New study warns over 200 species in the UK, including the merlin, are at risk of disappearing due to climate change and unsustainable land use.
Merlin, Britain's smallest bird of prey, is one of more than 200 species that could face extinction in the UK if immediate action is not taken to curb emissions and unsustainable land use practices, according to a new study by the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH).
The report paints a concerning picture, warning that the UK is facing an ecological 'point of no return' within the next 20 years. Decisions made during this critical window on climate change mitigation and land management will determine the fate of dozens of the country's native species.
The merlin, a diminutive falcon known for its incredible speed and agility, is among the species identified as being at high risk of disappearing from the British Isles altogether in a worst-case scenario. Other birds of prey, such as the hen harrier and peregrine falcon, are also highlighted as being under threat.
