Ukraine's Resolute Resistance: 4 Years After Russia's Invasion

As Russia's invasion of Ukraine enters its fifth year, the gains made by the Russian military have been small, while Ukraine remains resilient and clarifies its strategy to push back.
Four years into Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the gains made by the Russian military have been trivial, amounting to only 1,865 square miles during 2025 – about 0.8% of the country. Despite the challenges faced by Ukrainians, including hundreds of thousands of homes without electricity, heating, and water due to Russian bombing, Ukraine is clarifying its strategy and pushing back with modest success.
The Russian invasion, now entering its fifth grim year, has already gone on longer than the entire fight on the eastern front in the second world war. The Soviets marched from the gates of Leningrad to Berlin in a little over 15 months in 1944-45, while the Russian rate of gain in Pokrovsk, Ukraine, is just 70 meters a day, and in Kupiansk, it's 23 meters, according to the Centre for Strategic and International Studies.
