Ukrainian Cheerleaders Defy War, Find Joy in Midlife Passion

A team of Ukrainian women in their 50s and 60s use cheerleading to cope with the stress of Russia's invasion, refusing to let war defeat their midlife dreams.
Kharkiv, Ukraine - In a dimly lit sports hall on the outskirts of this war-scarred city, a group of Ukrainian women in their 50s and 60s gather for their weekly cheer practice. Despite the relentless bombing and constant threat of danger, these midlife cheerleaders refuse to let the conflict defeat their passion for the sport.
The Sunrise cheerleading team, made up of former teachers, nurses, and factory workers, have become an unlikely symbol of resilience in a country ravaged by four years of Russian invasion. As they perfect their high-flying stunts and energetic routines, the women find a sense of joy and purpose that helps them cope with the extreme stress and anxiety of living under the constant shadow of war.
