UN Calls for Uninterrupted Freedom of Navigation in Strait of Hormuz

The UN Secretary-General urges all parties to respect the right to free passage through the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz amidst regional tensions.
The United Nations has issued a call for all parties to respect the freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping chokepoint that has been the site of escalating tensions in the region.
In a statement, UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized the importance of maintaining the free flow of commerce through the strait, which connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. The secretary-general urged all involved parties to "exercise maximum restraint" and refrain from any actions that could further escalate the situation.
The Strait of Hormuz is a strategically vital waterway, with an estimated 21 million barrels of oil passing through it every day—accounting for about 21% of global petroleum liquids consumption. Any disruption to traffic through the strait could have significant economic and geopolitical consequences worldwide.

The United States has blamed Iran for the attacks, a claim that Tehran has vehemently denied. The situation has raised fears of a potential military confrontation between Iran and the U.S. or its allies.
In his statement, Guterres reiterated the UN's position that the "safety and security of international navigation and access to ports is crucial for the prosperity and economic development of the States in the region." He called on all parties to "uphold their obligations under international law" and to "avoid escalation."
