UN Resolution Reignites Calls for Slavery Reparations Worldwide

A historic UN resolution has sparked a renewed global debate over reparations for the transatlantic slave trade, with advocates pushing for acknowledgment, apologies, and systemic change.
A recent United Nations resolution has reignited the long-standing debate over reparations for the transatlantic slave trade. The resolution, which was passed with overwhelming support, has intensified calls from activists and political leaders around the world for formal recognition, apologies, and structural reforms to address the lasting impacts of centuries of enslavement and oppression.
The resolution, adopted by the UN General Assembly in late 2022, acknowledges the trans-Atlantic slave trade as "a crime against humanity" and "one of the major sources and manifestations of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance." It calls on member states to "honor the memory of the victims" and to "celebrate the resilience and contributions of people of African descent."
