Unlock Faster Broadband: New Gigabit Checker Helps Rural Britain Access High-Speed Internet

Discover if your rural home or business is eligible for government-backed gigabit broadband upgrades with the new address checker tool, as connectivity soars across England and Wales.
The rollout of faster broadband and mobile coverage across rural Britain has seen a surge in recent years, with the government actively investing in improving connectivity for communities long underserved by traditional telecom providers. To help residents and business owners understand if they are eligible for these government-backed broadband upgrades, a new gigabit address checker has been launched, giving people across England and Wales a direct way to assess the availability of high-speed internet in their local area.
The address checker, developed as part of the government's £5 billion Project Gigabit initiative, allows users to simply enter their postcode or address to instantly see if their property is eligible for a gigabit-capable broadband connection. Gigabit broadband, capable of download speeds up to 1,000 Mbps, is considered the gold standard for modern connectivity, enabling seamless access to data-intensive applications, streaming, remote work, and more.

Connectivity has become an essential utility, with the COVID-19 pandemic further highlighting the need for reliable, high-speed internet access across all regions of the country.
"Ensuring everyone in the UK can access world-class broadband is vital for unleashing our digital potential, leveling up across the country, and making sure no one is left behind," said Digital Secretary Nadine Dorries. "This new address checker is a significant milestone, giving people a simple way to see if they're eligible for our £5 billion broadband upgrade."

Through a combination of public funding and private investment, the program is supporting the rollout of full-fiber, cable, and wireless broadband technologies to underserved communities.
"This is a gamechanger for rural Britain," said CLA President Mark Tufnell. "Reliable, high-speed broadband is absolutely essential for the future of our countryside communities, unlocking new opportunities for businesses, education, healthcare, and quality of life. The new address checker is a welcome step in ensuring no one is left behind in the digital revolution."

Recent figures show that gigabit-capable broadband is now available to more than 60% of British properties, up from just 6% in 2019. Additionally, 4G mobile coverage now reaches 95% of the UK's landmass, providing a crucial foundation for 5G rollout and enhanced rural connectivity.
With the new address checker tool, rural communities across England and Wales can now easily determine if they are eligible for the government's broadband upgrade program, empowering them to take advantage of the latest advancements in high-speed internet and drive economic and social development in their local areas.
