Unraveling Mars' Ancient Subsurface: Perseverance's Radar Reveals Buried River Delta

NASA's Perseverance rover uncovers a buried river delta in Jezero Crater, hinting at potential signs of ancient Martian life deep underground.
Perseverance, NASA's intrepid rover, has uncovered a remarkable discovery on Mars - a buried river delta beneath the surface of Jezero Crater. This ancient geological feature, formed billions of years ago, could hold the key to understanding the potential for past life on the Red Planet.
When Perseverance touched down in Jezero Crater in 2021, its primary mission was to explore the dried-up lakebed and search for signs of ancient microbial life. Scientists have been particularly fascinated by the crater's spectacular Western Delta, a fan-shaped geological formation deposited by a river flowing into the basin eons ago. But now, the rover's ground-penetrating radar, known as RIMFAX, has detected an even older and deeper river delta buried beneath the surface.
