US Court Orders Billions in Trump Tariff Refunds to Importers

A US trade court judge has ordered the government to begin paying potentially billions in refunds to importers who paid tariffs the Supreme Court ruled were collected illegally under the Trump administration.
In a landmark ruling, a US trade court judge has ordered the government to begin the process of refunding billions of dollars in tariffs that were unlawfully collected from importers during the Trump administration. Richard Eaton, a judge of the US Court of International Trade, directed the government to finalize the cost of millions of shipments brought into the US without the assessment of these illegal tariffs, and to provide the refunds to importers with interest.
The ruling comes after the US Supreme Court last month deemed the tariffs, which were a key part of former President Donald Trump's trade policies, to be unlawful. Eaton's order requires the Customs and Border Protection agency to recalculate the entry costs on these shipments, effectively reversing the tariff charges and triggering the refund process.
