The young Uruguayan midfielder was the catalyst for Madrid's emphatic win, opening the scoring in the 36th minute with a clinical finish before doubling the lead with a superb solo effort just before half-time. Valverde then capped off his virtuoso display with a third goal midway through the second half, leaving City with a monumental task in the return leg at the Etihad Stadium next week.
