Victorian Commuters to Wait Until 2027 for Myki-Free Public Transport

Auditor's report reveals dispute with US contractor delayed full rollout of tap-and-go technology across Victoria, costing an additional $136.8 million.
Victorian commuters will have to continue using Myki cards for public transport until 2027, according to a report from the state's auditor general. The delay is due to a dispute between the transport department and US-based firm Conduent, which has added 18 months and $136.8 million to the project's cost.
The Victorian Auditor-General's Office (Vago) found that the disagreement between the government and the contractor was the primary cause of the setback in rolling out tap-and-go technology across the state's public transit system. This means that Myki cards will remain necessary for Victorian passengers until the end of the decade, despite earlier plans to phase them out sooner.
