Water Provider Faces Scrutiny Over Outages, CEO Apologizes to Customers

South East Water executives testify before MPs about service failures that left thousands without water over the winter, pledging to improve reliability and communication.
South East Water, a major UK water provider, faced tough questions from members of Parliament (MPs) over the company's failure to maintain reliable service, which left thousands of customers without access to water over the winter months. In testimony before the parliamentary committee, the water company's top executives acknowledged the disruptions and apologized for the inconvenience caused to their customers.
The hearing came in the wake of multiple service outages across the South East region, which the company attributed to a combination of factors, including burst pipes, power failures, and issues with water treatment plants. Ian McAulay, the CEO of South East Water, admitted that the company had not done enough to prepare for and respond to these challenges, leading to unacceptable levels of disruption for customers.
