Wikipedia Bans AI-Generated Articles in Major Policy Shift

Wikipedia has banned the use of AI-generated content in articles, citing violations of core policies. The new guidelines still allow some AI-assisted editing.
Wikipedia, the world's largest online encyclopedia, has announced a major policy shift that will ban the use of AI-generated articles across its platform. The update, which was added to Wikipedia's guidelines late last week, cites the tendency for AI-written content to violate "several of Wikipedia's core content policies" as the primary reason for the ban.
The change applies to the English version of Wikipedia and will still allow editors to use AI in certain scenarios. This includes using large language models to "suggest basic copyedits" to their writing, but only if it "does not introduce content of its own." Editors can also use AI to translate articles from another language's Wikipedia into English. However, they still must review and verify the accuracy of the translations before publishing.

The decision to ban AI-generated articles comes as large language models like GPT-3 and ChatGPT have become increasingly sophisticated, raising concerns about the potential for AI-written content to spread misinformation or violate principles of verifiability and neutrality that are central to Wikipedia's mission.
"We've seen a concerning trend of AI-written content that fails to meet our standards for verifiability, neutrality, and original research," said a spokesperson for the Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit that operates Wikipedia. "By prohibiting the use of AI to generate articles, we can better ensure the reliability and integrity of the information on our platform."
The ban on AI-generated articles is the latest in a series of steps taken by Wikipedia to address the challenges posed by emerging AI and language technology. In the past, the platform has also taken measures to combat the spread of misinformation and encourage the use of reliable sources.
"Wikipedia is built on the principle of crowdsourced, verifiable knowledge," the spokesperson added. "We believe this policy change will help us uphold that principle and maintain the trust of our readers, who rely on us for accurate, unbiased information."
The new guidelines do not, however, prohibit the use of AI in other aspects of the editorial process, such as research assistance, fact-checking, or data visualization. Editors can continue to utilize AI-powered tools and technologies to enhance their work, as long as they maintain oversight and ensure the final content meets Wikipedia's standards.
The ban on AI-generated articles is expected to have a significant impact on the platform, as AI writing has become increasingly prevalent in recent years. However, Wikipedia's leadership is confident that the policy change will ultimately strengthen the platform's reputation for reliability and trustworthiness.
"We believe this decision is a necessary step to uphold the integrity of Wikipedia and ensure that our readers can continue to trust the information they find on our platform," the spokesperson concluded. "We remain committed to exploring ways to harness the power of technology while also preserving the core values that have made Wikipedia the world's largest and most reliable online encyclopedia."
