Victims Empowered to Challenge Unjust Sentences

New legislation extends the timeframe for victims and bereaved families to contest lenient sentences, giving them a stronger voice in the justice system.
In a move to provide greater support and recourse for victims of crime and their families, new legislation has been introduced that extends the timeframe for challenging sentences deemed too lenient. Victims and bereaved families will now have an extended period to formally contest sentences they believe do not adequately reflect the gravity of the crimes committed against them.
The change in law comes after repeated calls from advocacy groups and high-profile cases where victims felt the justice system failed to deliver appropriate punishment. Prosecutors will also be granted more leeway to refer unduly lenient sentences to higher courts for review.
