Activist Speaks Out Against Alleged Harassment by German Border Authorities

A pro-Palestinian German activist claims she faced questioning and harassment at a Berlin airport, raising concerns about treatment of activists at the border.
Yasemin Acar, a pro-Palestinian German activist, has spoken out about what she says was harassment by German border police at a Berlin airport. In an interview with Al Jazeera, Acar detailed her experience, which she believes was an attempt to intimidate and deter her activism.
Acar, who is known for her advocacy work supporting the Palestinian cause, said she was subject to extensive questioning and searches when attempting to leave Germany. According to Acar, the border officials were particularly interested in her political views and affiliations, as well as the nature of her upcoming travel plans.

"They asked me a lot of questions about my political views, my connections to pro-Palestinian organizations, and what I planned to do abroad," Acar told Al Jazeera. "I felt like they were trying to intimidate me and make me feel like I was doing something wrong simply for being a vocal supporter of Palestinian rights."
Acar's experience has raised concerns among human rights advocates about the treatment of activists, particularly those with pro-Palestinian views, at international borders. Critics argue that such questioning and harassment can have a chilling effect on freedom of expression and the right to peaceful protest.
"This type of targeting of activists is deeply troubling," said Sarah Leah Whitson, executive director of the Democracy for the Arab World Now (DAWN) organization. "It suggests that the German government is willing to use its border control powers to harass and intimidate those who dare to speak out in support of Palestinian rights."
The German Federal Police, responsible for border control, has not yet commented on Acar's allegations. However, human rights groups have called for greater transparency and accountability regarding the treatment of travelers, particularly those involved in political advocacy.
Acar's experience has resonated with other pro-Palestinian activists, who have shared similar stories of being subjected to intrusive questioning and searches at international borders. As the debate over the Israeli-Palestinian conflict continues, the treatment of activists at borders remains a contentious and ongoing issue.
