Canada Finance Minister Doubts US Tariff Removal Despite Trump's Wish

Canada's finance minister expresses skepticism about the US lifting tariffs, even as President Trump eyes tariffs as a new revenue source for the country.
Canada's finance minister has voiced doubt that the United States will lift tariffs imposed on Canadian goods, despite US President Donald Trump's desire to use tariffs as the country's primary revenue source.
The remarks come after Trump stated his intention to replace income taxes with global tariffs as America's main source of revenue. However, Canadian Finance Minister Bill Morneau expressed skepticism about the likelihood of the US removing the existing tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum, and other products.
Morneau acknowledged the President's comments, but noted that the US has maintained the tariffs despite ongoing trade negotiations between the two countries. "I think the evidence of the last number of months would suggest that the likelihood of tariffs being removed is not high," Morneau told reporters.
The tariffs have been a source of tension between Canada and the US since they were first implemented in 2018. Canada has repeatedly called for the removal of the tariffs, which have impacted industries on both sides of the border.
Despite the President's comments, Morneau expressed confidence in the ongoing trade negotiations between the two countries. "We continue to work hard to try to find a resolution," he said, "but I think the evidence would suggest that the likelihood of tariffs being removed is not high."
The tariff dispute has been a significant point of contention in the broader US-Canada trade relationship, which is crucial for both economies. As the finance minister noted, the two countries will continue to work towards a resolution, but the Canadian government appears to be cautiously optimistic about the prospect of the US lifting the tariffs in the near future.
