Chile's Anti-Abortion President Sparks Concerns for Women's Rights

Women's rights activists in Chile brace for conservative President-elect José Antonio Kast, who has a history of blocking progressive reforms.
As the most conservative president since the Pinochet dictatorship prepares to take office in Chile, women's rights activists are bracing for a potential rollback of hard-won freedoms. José Antonio Kast, a 60-year-old ultra-Catholic whose father was a member of the Nazi party, has consistently opposed progressive initiatives for women's rights and equality throughout his three-decade political career.
Kast, who voted against legalizing divorce in 2004, has pushed for a return to a total ban on abortion, which was partially legalized in Chile in 2017 under limited circumstances. This move has sparked fears among women's rights advocates that the country may see a significant reversal of progress on reproductive rights and gender equality under Kast's administration.
