Controversial Comeback: Trump Opposes al-Maliki's Return as Iraq's PM

Trump administration voices concerns over potential reinstatement of former Iraqi leader Nouri al-Maliki, citing his role in sectarian divisions and failed security policies.
The Trump administration has publicly expressed its opposition to the potential comeback of Nouri al-Maliki as Iraq's prime minister. Al-Maliki, who served two terms as Iraq's leader from 2006 to 2014, is widely regarded as a divisive and controversial figure, whose sectarian policies and security failures contributed to the rise of ISIS in the country.
According to senior U.S. officials, the Trump White House is concerned that al-Maliki's return to power would exacerbate the country's sectarian tensions and undermine the progress made in recent years. The officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, emphasized that the administration views al-Maliki's potential reinstatement as a significant threat to Iraq's stability and the ongoing fight against extremist groups.
Al-Maliki's tenure as prime minister was marked by allegations of corruption, human rights abuses, and the marginalization of the country's Sunni minority. His heavy-handed approach towards the Sunni population, combined with his failure to build an inclusive government, are widely seen as contributing factors to the rise of ISIS in 2014, which seized control of large swaths of Iraqi territory.
