A prominent military analyst has made a controversial proposal that the United States may need to deploy ground forces to Iran in order to secure the Strait of Hormuz and achieve other key war objectives that cannot be met with air power alone.
Kenneth Katzman, a senior analyst at the Congressional Research Service, argued that while air strikes and naval operations can inflict significant damage on Iran, a ground invasion may ultimately be required to fully accomplish US military goals in the region. Katzman stated that
