Cybercriminals Infiltrate Steam with Malicious Gaming Apps

The FBI is investigating a troubling trend of malware hidden inside video games on the popular digital distribution platform Steam, posing a threat to unsuspecting gamers.
Cybercriminals have found a novel way to target unsuspecting gamers by embedding malware inside video games hosted on the popular digital distribution platform Steam, according to the FBI's ongoing investigation.
The federal agency believes a series of games published on Steam over the last two years were infected with malicious code by the same hacker or group of hackers. These tainted games pose a significant threat to the platform's user base, which exceeds 120 million active accounts worldwide.
In a statement, the FBI warned that compromised games can be used to steal sensitive user data, hijack systems, and even infiltrate corporate networks if players happen to be using their work devices to access the infected titles.
