Danish PM Calls Snap Election Seeking Arctic Boost

Danish PM Mette Frederiksen hopes to capitalize on her defiance of Trump's Greenland ambitions, calling early election to ride 'Greenland bounce' in polls.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has announced an early election, aiming to capitalize on a potential Greenland bounce after her high-profile standoff with former U.S. President Donald Trump over the Arctic territory.
Frederiksen, who has led the Social Democratic government since 2019, is required by Danish law to call an election by October 31st. By setting the date eight months ahead of schedule, she appears to be seeking an electoral advantage from her firm rejection of Trump's attempted purchase of Greenland in 2019, which was widely seen as a diplomatic humiliation for the former U.S. president.
The early election call comes after the Social Democrats suffered significant losses in November 2025 local elections, with the party losing control of Copenhagen for the first time in a century. Frederiksen will be hoping that her tough stance on Greenland and the perceived global leadership she demonstrated in that episode will translate into a boost in her party's popularity nationwide.
