Democracy Activist Jimmy Lai Wins Appeal Against Fraud Conviction in Hong Kong

Hong Kong appeals court overturns rent fraud conviction of prominent pro-democracy figure Jimmy Lai, who remains imprisoned on national security charges.
In a significant legal victory for Hong Kong's pro-democracy movement, a Hong Kong appeals court has overturned the fraud conviction of prominent democracy advocate Jimmy Lai. The court ruled that prosecutors failed to prove Lai had committed rent fraud, a decision that provides a rare win for the beleaguered opposition figures in the city.
Lai, the former publisher of the now-shuttered Apple Daily newspaper, had been convicted in 2022 of fraud related to the alleged misuse of office space. However, the appeals court found that the prosecution had not sufficiently demonstrated that Lai's company had violated its lease agreement with the landlord.
