Former Philippine President Duterte Declines I.C.C. Hearing, Faces Probe

Ex-leader Rodrigo Duterte refuses to attend International Criminal Court hearing as it weighs evidence of crimes against humanity during his controversial drug war.
Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has announced that he will not appear at a hearing held by the International Criminal Court (I.C.C.) as it investigates allegations of crimes against humanity committed during his bloody drug war. Duterte, who left office in June 2022, has consistently denied the accusations and maintains that his crackdown on illegal narcotics was necessary to protect public safety.
The I.C.C. is currently reviewing evidence gathered by its prosecutors, who allege that Duterte's anti-drug campaign resulted in the extrajudicial killings of thousands of suspected drug dealers and users. The former president's legal team has argued that the court has no jurisdiction over the Philippines, which withdrew from the I.C.C. in 2019 shortly after the investigation was launched.
