Germany Mulls Autobahn Speed Limit as Fuel Prices Skyrocket

Amid surging fuel costs due to the Iran-induced crisis, a top economist proposes a temporary speed limit on Germany's iconic autobahn. Protesters also prepare for annual Easter peace rallies.
Germany is grappling with the fallout from the ongoing geopolitical tensions, as a leading economist has suggested implementing a temporary speed limit on the country's famous autobahn network to help mitigate the impact of rising fuel prices. This recommendation comes as the nation braces for its annual Easter peace marches, which are expected to draw protesters concerned about the escalating global situation.
The spike in fuel costs can be directly attributed to the ongoing conflict in Iran, which has disrupted global oil supply and distribution. In response, Marcel Fratzscher, the president of the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW), has proposed a speed limit on the autobahn as a potential solution to ease the burden on German consumers.
Fratzscher argues that a temporary speed limit would not only reduce fuel consumption but also send a strong signal about the gravity of the situation. He suggests that the limit could be set at around 120 kilometers per hour (75 miles per hour), a significant reduction from the current unrestricted sections of the autobahn.
