GOP Lawmakers Stall Democrats' Efforts for Public Hearings on Iran Conflict

Republican representatives block Democrats' push to question Trump officials about the escalating tensions and potential war with Iran in public congressional hearings.
Republicans in the House of Representatives have blocked an effort by Democrats to hold public hearings questioning Trump administration officials about the potential war with Iran. Representative Gregory Meeks, the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, had sought to bring in administration officials for public testimony about the escalating tensions and the U.S. airstrike that killed a top Iranian general.
The move by Republicans to prevent the public hearings is the latest partisan clash over the administration's Iran policy. Democrats have criticized the lack of transparency around the decision to target Iranian General Qassem Soleimani, as well as the potential consequences of the action. Republicans have generally supported the administration's aggressive stance toward Iran.
In a statement, Meeks said he was disappointed by the Republican blockade, arguing that the public deserves answers about the administration's decision-making and preparation for potential retaliation from Iran. Bipartisan oversight of foreign policy is crucial, he said.
