Grassroots Activism Raises Millions to Support Minnesota Community

Meet the digital strategist who launched a viral fundraiser to aid families impacted by ICE raids in Minneapolis, raising almost $20 million to date.
In the wake of federal immigration authorities swarming the streets of Minneapolis, Ashley Fairbanks, a 39-year-old writer, artist, and digital strategist living in San Antonio, knew she had to take action. From thousands of miles away, Fairbanks watched the news unfold and saw regular citizens stepping up to defend and care for their communities. Inspired by their grassroots efforts, she sprang into action and started a simple Google Doc to compile a list of resources for residents.
As the document grew increasingly unwieldy, Fairbanks, who builds websites for a living, decided to launch a more comprehensive platform: Stand with Minnesota. This online hub quickly became a centralized destination for information, donations, and community organizing in the face of the ICE raids rocking her hometown.

Fairbanks' initial Google Doc had morphed into a powerful tool for grassroots activism. Donations began pouring in from across the country, and the funds were used to directly support Minnesota families in need – covering rent, utilities, and other essential expenses impacted by the raids.
To date, Stand with Minnesota has raised nearly $20 million to aid those affected by the immigration enforcement actions. But for Fairbanks, the project is about more than just fundraising. It's about empowering and amplifying the voices of the local community, and demonstrating the transformative power of collective action.
