Harnessing Etna's Ash: Sicilian Farmers Reap Benefits of Volcanic Fertilizer

Discover how Sicilian farmers are turning the nuisance of Etna's volcanic ash into an agricultural boon, using it as a unique and potent fertilizer to boost their crops.
Volcanic ash, once seen as a mere nuisance, has now become a valuable asset for Sicilian farmers thanks to a groundbreaking project. In the town of Giarre, overlooking the mighty Mount Etna, Andrea Passanisi, a tropical and citrus fruits producer, has been using this unlikely fertilizer on his 100-hectare (247-acre) stretch of land.
For generations, the residents of rural towns perched on Etna's slopes have had to contend with the constant rainfall of volcanic ash. But in recent years, the sheer quantity of ash has become so overwhelming that it required a new approach. Passanisi and his fellow farmers have discovered the remarkable agricultural potential of this natural resource.
