High-Stakes Battle for Black Voters in Illinois Senate Primary

Tensions rise as Lt. Gov. Stratton and Rep. Kelly compete for the support of Illinois' crucial Black Democratic electorate in the high-profile Senate primary election.
Illinois' Democratic primary for the open U.S. Senate seat is shaping up to be a high-stakes battle for the Black vote. With two prominent Black candidates - Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton and Rep. Robin Kelly - the race has become a proxy fight for the direction of the Democratic party and its most loyal voting bloc.
Stratton, who has the backing of Gov. J.B. Pritzker and other establishment figures, is positioning herself as the pragmatic, experienced choice. Kelly, meanwhile, is campaigning as a progressive champion who will be a more forceful voice for marginalized communities.
The competition for Black voters is intensifying as the June 28 primary nears. Both candidates are flooding Black neighborhoods with mailers, TV ads, and in-person events, while also making direct appeals through Black media and churches.
