House Armed Services Leader Weighs in on Iran War and DHS Funding

Ranking Member Adam Smith discusses the ongoing war with Iran, the role of the House Armed Services Committee, and the critical issue of DHS funding.
The war with Iran, now more than a month old, has become a major focus for the House Armed Services Committee. NPR's Scott Simon recently sat down with Representative Adam Smith, the ranking Democratic member of the committee, to get his insights on the conflict and other key national security issues.
Smith, a Democrat from Washington state, began by acknowledging the gravity of the situation. "This is a serious and escalating conflict," he said. "The stakes are extremely high, both in terms of the potential for further military confrontation and the broader geopolitical implications."
The congressman went on to outline some of the key challenges facing U.S. policymakers. "We're dealing with a complex and rapidly evolving situation," he explained. "Iran has demonstrated a willingness to be aggressive and take risks, but they also seem open to diplomatic off-ramps if the right incentives are in place."
