Inequality Debate Heats Up at China's Top Political Gathering

As China's top political leaders convene, a rare public discussion emerges on the country's growing wealth gap and efforts to address inequality.
China's annual political gathering, known as the National People's Congress, is typically a carefully orchestrated affair where the ruling Communist Party showcases its agenda and projects an image of unity. But this year, a rare public debate has erupted around a seemingly mundane issue: the minimum basic pension for rural residents.
The Chinese government announced it would increase this monthly payout by 20 yuan, or about $3, bringing the total to 163 yuan per month. While a small sum, the move has sparked a lively discussion about income inequality and the government's efforts to address the growing divide between China's urban elite and its vast rural population.
